if the mail notification looks like this:

Backup backup_Daily Prod_20120419200002 completed with status partial success.
Following VMs were not backed up : [myvm, myothervm]

and the Log in \\vcenter\c$\Program Files\NetApp\Virtual Storage Console\smvi\server\repository\logs\jobid\jobname_timestamp.xml says:

VMware Task "CreateSnapshot_Task" for entity "myvm" failed with the following error: Operation timed out (Zeitüberschreitung beim Vorgang)

then most likely the ESX host or vCenter is too busy creating all snapshots.
SMVI creates 6 concurrent VMware snapshots per datastore.

Solutions

• make backup jobs with less VMs (one job per datastore)

• limit the concurrent VMware snapshots. this can be done in the file:

\\vcenter\c$\Program Files\NetApp\Virtual Storage Console\smvi\server\etc\smvi.override

change the line

#vmware.max.concurrent.snapshots=6

to

vmware.max.concurrent.snapshots=3

and restart the service:

net stop smvi
net start smvi

SV-SMVI provides basic SnapVault functionality in combination with NetApp and VMware consistent backups created through the Backup and Restore section of NetApp’s Virtual Storage Console (VSC), formerly known as SnapManager for Virtual Infrastructure (SMVI). Some customers require the use of SnapVault instead of SnapMirror, and SV-SMVI can perform the identification and replication process for specific VSC/SMVI backup sets.

Install

• unpack the sv-smvi zip file to \\vcenter\c$\Program Files\NetApp\sv-smvi\
• Copy the following lines into \\vcenter\c$\Program Files\NetApp\Virtual Storage Console\smvi\server\scripts\sv-smvi.cmd

• change the username and password hash in the script to the appropriate account
• add the script to the SMVI backup job

Tips

• the parameter -https does not seem to work! the filer must have http (without ssl) enabled!

  options httpd.admin.enable on

  if there are errors or problems, enable the log file. by default, there is no log!
  add the following parameters to enable logging:

  -report -reportdir c:\temp
